Many e-commerce founders celebrate hitting $50,000 in monthly revenue, only to discover at the end of the month that their bank account balance is shrinking. The culprit? Confusing profit margin with markup, overspending on paid ads beyond breakeven ROAS, and underestimating marketplace fulfillment fees.

Whether you run an independent Shopify DTC brand or an Amazon FBA store, mastering unit economics is the difference between building a sustainable business and going bankrupt.

Margin vs. Markup: The Crucial Difference

These two terms sound similar, but using them interchangeably leads to catastrophic pricing errors:

  • Markup: The percentage added to product cost to determine selling price.

Formula: (Profit / Cost) x 100. Example: Product costs $50, sold for $100. Markup = ($50 / $50) x 100 = 100% Markup.

  • Profit Margin: The percentage of selling price that remains as profit after deducting product cost.

Formula: (Profit / Selling Price) x 100. Example: Sold for $100, profit is $50. Margin = ($50 / $100) x 100 = 50% Margin.

Calculating Breakeven ROAS for Meta & Google Ads

Return On Ad Spend (ROAS) measures ad revenue generated per dollar spent on advertising. If your product sells for $60 and costs $24 (COGS + shipping), your contribution margin is $36 (60% gross margin). Breakeven ROAS Formula: 1 / Margin Percentage = 1 / 0.60 = 1.67x ROAS.

  • If your ad campaigns deliver higher than 1.67x ROAS, you are making money.
  • If your ad campaigns deliver lower than 1.67x ROAS, every order is losing cash!
